How to be a Leader - Mistakes Every Leader Should Know

For business leaders who are successful, you've already mastered the art of ambition, tested your drive to the limits and led projects with top clients. Without a doubt you have many leadership strengths; however, you may have several weaknesses that may limit your potential success. By realizing and addressing typical leadership mistakes is fundamental to expanding on your leadership skills which will ultimately grow your career and business. Continue on for five leadership mistakes and how to correct them.

1. Leggo Your Ego
Stop limiting yourself! As a successful business leader you may be overconfident. After all, what landed you a leadership position is most likely your confidence and ambition, however these traits may alter the way you make sound business decisions. A solution is to take a step back and see what has worked in the business and what has not. Network with other successful business leaders and even your own employees and get ideas for improvement. A leadership coach may even help you with your strengths and weaknesses.

2. Dare to Delegate
As a leader you're called upon to make many important decisions but at some point you need to let some control go and have trust in others to make some decisions. At some point in your career you should move out of a controlling role and into an influential role. You hired smart people for a reason so help them develop their skills and allow them to grow.

3. Strategize Your Vision
Since the very beginning you've been involved with the day-to-day operations of your business. Take time to step back and reassess the future of your company. Develop a strategic vision for your company and look five, ten, or even fifteen years away. Since you've trusted others and delegated much of the decision-making, you provided yourself with the necessary time to create an outline with your professional and personal goals. In order to achieve continued success this is mandatory.

4. Promote a Proactive Setting
If you don't allow employees to have a say in any processes they'll simply just follow along with your preferences and not provide their honest feedback. Be sure to let your staff know that their feedback is welcomed and appreciated otherwise they'll just react to your demands.

5. Learn Learn Learn!
Do you think you have the same knowledge as you did ten years ago? Most likely the answer is no and the truth is the executive leadership training you learned years ago may not apply today. It is extremely important to constantly learn and develop your leadership skills and invest in yourself.
You definitely know your business best but there is always room to grow. Learning all you can about leadership skills will help you conquer tough goals and bring top talent to your organization. Breaking old habits will be difficult but the resulting rewards you'll gain by expanding your skill set will be exponential.
