Does this sound tempting? "Get 1 Million visitors to your website this week for only [insert price] bucks!" Just imagine how fast that could build your list! Or not... You probably realize this traffic shortcut sounds too good to be true. Is it? Here's the scoop.
All website owners need traffic to build their lists and to sell products. Unfortunately, traffic can be hard to come by or rather expensive, sometimes both. This means that there's a desperate market for cheap traffic -- and there are plenty of places that seem to offer traffic shortcuts for a quick fix.
Except... what is it that those quick fixes are actually fixing?
If what you want is pretty graphics and high numbers on your AWSTATS or other website statistics profile, many of those services actually deliver. You may get thousands of additional views or hits.
But...
Check where they come from -- and how long they stay. Most of them come from places where most people don't speak English, and, well, why would they spend any extra time on your site if they don't even understand a word of what you're saying?
What's worse, many of those "visitors" may not even be human. In fact, your web host might shut off robot access because it's suddenly overrun with robots -- and that might also shut out Google & Co.
But what if you're really tempted to give some of those businesses a try? At least start with the lowest possible number of "visitors" you can buy and keep close tabs on what happens as a result. Yes, even if buying more seems such a steal!
In fact, before you even buy any traffic at all, keep close tabs on your results for a week so that you'll know exactly what might be different about that "new" traffic.
Then, order the traffic and watch what happens. Maybe you get lucky and your new traffic is really legit. But chances are that if you get the traffic, it's very likely to be untargeted in the extreme.
Check where your visitors are coming from and how long they stay on your site. Also check which pages they look at and -- of course -- check if your sales or sign-ups go up.
If you like what you see, by all means, buy more, and let me know which site it was that actually delivered the results. If you don't like what's happening, at least you haven't wasted too much money.
There's another problem with those cheap traffic sources: even IF they are legit and even IF they deliver human, English-speaking visitors, those visitors are not very targeted.
You'll do much better with a more tightly targeted source of traffic such as article marketing, social media marketing, or pay per click advertising, where the people who visit your website do so because they want your information. The numbers might be lower than those you could get with traffic shortcuts, but your results will be a whole lot better.
