A well-known argument these days appears to be, when purchasing a computer system, on whether to go for a popular brand personal computer (i.e. IBM) or perhaps a system built yourself at home.
Regardless of whether this is for a company, or a simple system set-up at home, the question is still there.There are pro's and con's to both, and rather than going on forever about all of the technical things, lets keep it simple.
Popular Brands.The Pro's.
* You can find fantastic package deals - for example, everything included for a fixed cost. Get it back home, take everything out of the box, plug everything in - done!
* Most popular brand personal computers come with a warranty, as a standard!
* Back-up and support - always available. A support team will provide help should you have difficulties getting it to work. I am sure practically everyone has at one time, forgotten to connect that one essential cable? Maybe you've taken out an essential windows file by mistake, or simply cannot find one of the fundamental programs.
The Con's.
* Numerous brand systems, have included as many extras in there as possible. If using spread-sheet's is your go - then the latest eye-popping gaming graphics-card won't do you a lot of good. Similarly, if you're into gaming, then the newest microsoft office won't get worn-out.
* Ordinarily, there will be a pre-installed anti-virus set-up. You may have your own ideas on just what constitutes a decent AV program, and sometimes the current one can prove extremely hard to adequately get rid of, before adding your own set-up.
* The decision has already been made for you, as to just what it is, that signifies a decent system. This means a good deal of extraneous software gets pre-installed on your system, just sitting there wasting useful disk space. So you end up with bloatware, rather than software.
* If you want to build onto your system, such as: add more memory, extra hard drives, upgraded video card, and so on, first you need to find out if it's compatible with your particular model, and similar.
D.I.Y. Systems -The Pro's.
* You can begin from scratch and select every element individually, to your liking. Total freedom of choice creating your ultimate program is in your hands.
* Should you wish to substitute or update specific elements, with a D.I.Y. system all you have to know, is what kind card (AGP, PCI-E) and just go find another card, insert it and eureka, finished!
* Good deals on system elements are to be discovered at various online outlets, or, swap-meets. Auction sites are a small bit suspect, as you could in fact end up with elements cannibalized by some fool, looking for a quick buck - recovering parts from a computer found in a rubbish dump.
* You never have to pay more than you want to.
* You add precisely those elements which you require, and whenever you want to change something, you just go acquire it.
The Con's.
* No guarantee with the exception of manufacturer's warranty on parts, and whatsoever guarantee arrives from where ever you bought the component.
* No back-up or support. Apart from geeks that you know personally.
* If you don't know what you are looking at, you could end up with a very expensive carton of parts.
Things to ponder:
* What is it that you want the system to do for you (information, digital imagery) ?
* What are you expecting from the system? Will it remain as it is, with few add-ons, or do you intend the system to be quite complex over time?
* What are your budget's limitations?
* How good is your knowledge of repair and maintenance, if the system requires it?
* What are your abilities?
It will pay you, in the long run, to take these pro's and con's into consideration when deciding whether you will make your own computer system or buy one.
